The report does not conta in any definition of these terms, but from a passage in the "Instructions to Supervisors" it seems at any rate possible that "Adults" means all persons of 15 years of age and over. In the circumstances, comparisons are difficult.
N.Borneo. In the summary of replies to the League of Nations Opium Questionnaire, it is stated that the number of Adult Vale Chinese was 37,600 in 1919. Even allowing for thef Trade depression of 1920-21, and the consequent partial dispersion of the labour force, it seems hardly likely that this can be accurate. The Company were however expecting considerable increases in their Chinese population in 1922 and onwards. Whether these expected increases have materialised and if so to what extent, it is impossible to say.
